Gater Snacks

24 Feb

A day late, but worth the wait. Bits and bites from ‘round the net; an ode to awesome, a cyber vignette.

{Reel} Aimee Mullins – The Opportunity of Adversity

The ever-thoughtful, analytical and inspiring Jason Markow pointed me to Aimee Mullins’s TED talks.  Mullins’s story—and more importantly (to me) how she tells her story—is poignant and thought provoking. It’s worth the 20 minutes. Watching this video has made me reflect on the power of language…and how I can {should} use words to create good.

{Local Happenings} PodCamp + Fort Collins + Cohere coworking

For my Colorado friends, exciting news on the Front Range tech front… Fort Collins is kicking off its first podcamp! Mark your calendars: on March 12 & 13 the awesomeness of the unconference will descend on Fort Collins. Sign up now. Sadly, I can’t attend…happily, I can’t attend because I’ll be at SxSWi! (Oh, and if you’re going to SxSWi, let’s meet! Plz?!)

Y’know what’s especially cool about this PodCamp? It will happen at Cohere, a brand-spanky new coworking space. Angel Kwiatkowski took me to tour the space yesterday, and let me tell you—it is gorgeous. You’ll likely hear more about Cohere from me in the future…but connect with Cohere on Twitter to find out more.

{Social Entreprenuership 101} Alvin’s Guide to Good Business

I’m thrilled. BBC & the Skoll Foundation are doing a tv series spotlighting social entrepreneurs. Full episodes of the series will be available for free here. I’m hoping it will be a great introduction to social entrepreneurship for the uninitiated.

{Tune} Django Reinhardt – Sweet Georgia Brown

Sweet.

A Vision of Your Own Horizon

19 Feb

The Eye – by Kahlil Gibran

Said the Eye one day, “I see beyond these valleys a mountain veiled with blue mist. Is it not beautiful?”

The Ear listened, and after listening intently awhile, said, “But where is any mountain? I do not hear it.”

Then the Hand spoke and said, “I am trying in vain to feel it or touch it, and I can find no mountain.”

And the Nose said, “There is no mountain, I cannot smell it.”

The the Eye turned the other way, and they all began to talk together about the Eye’s strange delusion. And they said, “Something must be the matter with the Eye.”

What do YOU see on your life’s horizon?

Perhaps your friends, family or coworkers are the ear, hand and nose — they don’t have the same vision for your ideas, projects and future as you do. That’s okay.

I place an immense amount of value in the advice and support that friends and family share with me. In fact, their guidance bolsters most of my life decisions. I’m grateful for that.

But sometimes we see a mountain veiled in mist in the horizon — a mountain we cannot hear, touch or smell. But we can see it.

As I walk toward the mountains in my horizon, I am undeterred…but not inflexible. I’m just trying to maintain my vision.

What do you see on your horizon? Are you moving toward it?
